About the E-Legacy Awards
On Thursday, 1 November 2007 Electronic Product Design hosted the first e-Legacy Awards. These Awards are designed to celebrate the value of electronics and electronics companies and how they can build a better future today.
Caroline Hayes, editor, Electronic Product Design explains how the awards came into being: 'The e-Legacy Awards are a defiant response to reports about the 'wasteful' power-hungry' electronics industry....Yet in my role as editor, I see so many positive things that electronics companies do, that I wanted a vehicle to show this and to demonstrate how we can create a lasting legacy for future generations.'
The awards' categories were unusual in that they asked readers to vote on projects and initiatives that contribute to education, the environment, health and safety.
The sponsors selected the finalists in each category but, explains Hayes, 'Electronic Product Design's readers voted in their thousands [for the winners] for these awards,' adding the volume of entries and the quality received, means that all the e-Legacy finalists should be rightly proud of the projects that brought them to the Awards lunch.'
The 2008 e-Legacy Awards presentation luncheon will take place on 11th September 2008 at the Kensington Roof Gardens.

Are you considering development projects in one of the following areas:
If so, consider engaging the services of a University PhD student for up to 3.5 years for a cost of £22k (plus expenses)
The Electronics KTN have been appointed as an agent, by the Engineering & Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) to award three Industrial CASE (Collaborative award in science & engineering) awards.
Industrial CASE Awards are three and a half year postgraduate awards. The aim of the awards is to enable companies to take the lead in defining, and arranging projects, with an academic partner of their choice.
This is a tremendous opportunity for companies who may wish to initiate or boost their research and development capability over the next three years. This scheme enables a company to employ the services of a highly qualified post-graduate trainee.
The EPSRC grant covers the students stipend of £63,789 over 3.5 years, with a minimum company contribution of £21,263. It is expected that a proportion of this contribution would be used to top-up the student's minimum stipend. The company is also required to cover all expenses (e.g. travel and accommodation) for any time the student spends at the sponsoring company, plus expenses of the research student. In addition, the company must provide mentoring resource for the student for the project, as well as three months on site work experience.
The company can specify the research project of their choice, and work with universities to identify a suitable student. Projects are eligible to start any time from September 5th 2008 but all projects must have begun no later than September 1st 2009.
Each award made will consist in a post-graduate (PhD) student working on an industry relevant research project for 3.5 years. The studentships are awarded to companies who define the project and identify the academic partner, or vice-versa. Collaborating companies will usually be in the private sector and SME involvement is particularly encouraged. Once the studentship is awarded to the company, their academic partner recruits a suitable student to conduct the research.
IP rights are agreed mutually between the research student, university and company at the outset of the project.
Closing date for applications is 15th August 2008.
The applications will be assessed by a panel from the Board of Directors and Executive team.

The ARTEMIS (“Advanced Research and Technology for Embedded Intelligence and Systems”) Joint Technology Initiative is the name given to the latest EU scheme for companies developing embedded computing systems.
The total value of this research programme is €2.7 billion over 10 years and, for the first time, European Community R&D funds are being pooled with national funds and industry investment to give the potential to fund more and larger projects.
The 2008 Project Call was originally announced on 8th May 2008. The €200 Million committed to this call is funded in equal measures by public sector and by industry.
The UK, through the Technology Strategy Board, is investing €3 million this year which will be matched with European research funding and private sector funding to bring the total project value for UK companies to €9 million.
In previous ARTEMIS information and brokerage meetings a number of prototype project teams have already come together.
The meeting on 29th July is your chance to influence the UK’s research agenda for proposals for the next deadline of this call (Sept 2008).
It is also an opportunity to gain an overview of how the Artemis programme is developing, understand the current areas of interest and to connect with UK based collaborative partners.
So if you have ever been interested in R&D funds from government but felt that your project did not fit well with the programme scope come to this workshop and help set the government agenda and priorities.
If you’re involved in Embedded Systems your company can gain funding for R&D work via this programme.
